Sustainability

Durable mast solutions — from factory to field

Mastsystem International Oy manufactures tactical telescopic masts in Joensuu, Finland. Sustainability is part of our daily operations: it is reflected in our material choices, production processes, and the way we care for our environment and our people. We commit only to what we do, and we do it consistently, measuring our results.

We are part of the Swedish Lagercrantz Group and adhere to its sustainability principles and Code of Conduct.

Environmental and safety Management

Our operations are governed by a certified environmental management system, regularly audited by an external body.

ISO 14001:2015 — Environmental Management System

ISO 9001:2015 — Quality Management System

AQAP2110:2016 — Quality Management System

Environmental management is reviewed quarterly in SHE management review meetings, covering energy consumption, waste volumes, safety statistics and progress towards environmental objectives.

Energy and Emissions

In recent years, we have implemented several measures at our Joensuu factory to reduce energy consumption:

Implemented Measures

  • Transition to pellet heating — we are replacing oil-based heating with a renewable pellet solution, directly reducing our Scope 1 emissions.
  • LED lighting upgrade — all production facility lighting has been converted to energy-efficient LED technology.
  • Building automation modernisation — heating and ventilation controls have been upgraded to optimise energy use.
  • Compressed air system optimisation — the compressor has been replaced and the usage is optimised, reducing electricity consumption.
  • EV charging stations — six charging stations have been installed at the factory for employee use.

The combined effect of these measures has reduced our electricity consumption by 25–30% over recent years. We monitor energy consumption continuously: electricity, pellet and oil usage are reported quarterly in SHE management reviews.

Carbon Footprint

Our operational carbon footprint is approximately 864 tonnes of CO₂. The majority of our emissions arise from the supply chain, which requires long-term effort to address. The transition to pellet heating will further reduce our direct emissions share going forward.

Materials and Product Lifecycle

Our product design supports sustainability in several ways:

Composite Materials

We manufacture masts from glass and carbon fibre composite, which is significantly lighter than traditional aluminium. The reduced weight lowers transport energy consumption and simplifies installation without heavy equipment. Composite does not corrode, eliminating the need for protective coatings and associated chemicals.

Long Service Life

Composite masts are designed for decades of reliable field operation without significant performance degradation. A long service life means fewer replacement products and less waste over time.

Mechanical Elevation System

Our telescopic mast elevation mechanism operates mechanically via winch and belt drive — without external electricity, hydraulic oil, or compressed air. This eliminates the risk of hydraulic oil leaks into the environment and reduces operational energy requirements in the field.

Telescopic Design and Transport

The telescopic design allows masts to be transported in compact form, reducing the space required for logistics and thereby the environmental footprint of transportation.

Supply Chain and Local Sourcing

Our supply chain is heavily weighted towards domestic procurement. A significant proportion of our components and services are sourced from Finland, with many key suppliers located on the same industrial estate in Joensuu, right next door to our factory.

Local sourcing means shorter transport distances, better traceability, and close collaboration with suppliers on quality and environmental matters.

New suppliers are required to provide baseline information on environmental responsibility through our supplier assessment form. Supplier audits are conducted as needed, covering quality, environmental and certification matters.

Waste Management and Circular Economy

Production waste is sorted and recycled as efficiently as possible. We have improved waste sorting and recycling in recent years. As a concrete example, we have acquired a cardboard perforator that converts cardboard waste into a mesh-like packaging material — reducing our use of cushioning plastic in packaging.

Our waste stream comprises energy fractions and wood (utilised as energy fuel), recyclable materials, mixed waste (incineration), and fractions requiring final treatment (e.g. paint waste). Waste data is collected in partnership with our waste management provider.

Occupational Safety and People

Workplace safety is a cornerstone of our operations. Our target is zero lost-time injuries. The most recent lost-time injury occurred in 2023.

Safety is managed by a dedicated safety organisation responsible for instructions, induction, and supervision. Line management holds day-to-day safety responsibility, supported by specialist functions.

Compliance and Governance

We comply with all applicable laws and regulations and take responsibility for our environment. As part of the Lagercrantz Group, we adhere to the Group’s Code of Conduct, covering environmental, human rights and business ethics matters.

Lagercrantz Group

Mastsystem has been part of Lagercrantz Group since 2024. The Group publishes an annual integrated sustainability report and provides shared principles for responsible business.
